12th International Space Syntax Symposium

The 12th International Space Syntax Symposium (12SSS) will be held in Beijing from 8th to 13th July 2019, at Beijing Jiaotong University

The 12th International Space Syntax Symposium (12SSS) will be held in Beijing from 8th to 13th July 2019, at Beijing Jiaotong University. The aim of the symposium is to bring together scholars, practitioners and students who are currently working on space syntax and related approaches all over the world to share knowledge, discuss theories as well as practical applications. We also expect this event will push forward the development of an evidence-based or research-led design methodology.

Space Syntax has been introduced to China for more than 30 years. It is both an powerful theory and a model which could be used to analyze the relationship between behavior data and spatial morphology. With the increasing influence of big data brought to the fields of urban design and planning, more and more Chinese scholars and practitioners are aware of the value of space syntax. From 2015, space syntax scholars in China established an annual conference which attracted many attentions. Under this context, we strongly believe that the forthcoming 12SSS could provide wonderful opportunities of communication for the Chinese scholars with the international community.

The application and organization of 12SSS is a joint effort by the active space syntax scholars from many universities and design institutes such us Beijing Jiaotong University, Southeast University, Shenzhen University, Tongji University, Tianjin University, Zhejiang University of Technology, China Academy of Urban Planning & Design, etc. It is also supported by the Urban Planning Society of China and the China Institute of Urban Design. With an open, diversified and inclusive mindset, we sincerely welcome everyone who is interested in space syntax, or any other theories and methods on data-based spatial analysis and modeling, to visit Beijing and participate in our symposium in 2019!
